LINDA H. BLASDEL’S CANCER SURVIVORSHIP TESTIMONIAL |
After many years of questionable mammograms, ultrasounds and lumpectomies, all of which were benign, in November, 2008, the demon known as breast cancer reared its ugly head, resulting in Linda’s having a bi-lateral mastectomy. The emotions of fear and anger evoked with the diagnosis of cancer cannot be defined or understood unless one has “been there.” All of one’s priorities change, along with lifestyle, knowing survival is dependent upon chemotherapy treatments. This is a time in one’s life when there can be no mistakes in judgment and allows no denial. The facts must be faced, and treatment must begin immediately. In today’s world of proven medical research and early detection, surviving cancer for many ensuing years is, by no means, impossible; however, it requires proaction, determination, a strong will to live, a positive attitude and the power of prayer.
Upon attaining the ultimate goal of clinical remission, the journey is far from over. Continued monitoring and testing are required to keep the demon “in check.” But, there are other components of continued survival, not the least of which is “giving back.” One must never forget where he has been and where he is now. There are many others embarking daily upon the long journey, and – as a cancer survivor --offering support to individuals and groups is as great a healing power as the clinical treatment.
Linda has done just that by speaking, often daily, to individual cancer patients and has added a dimension to her life as a survivor by getting involved in The Jabboury Foundation for Cancer Research and Early Detection. Remission is a great reward for having endured, while traveling the road to survival, but the greater reward is in offering comfort personally to others and supporting a cause dedicated to helping find a cure.
